Cirrus Logic announced a new highly integrated low-power stereo CODEC for portable audio applications designed to meet the growing demand for analog integrated circuit (IC) markets. The CS42L51 is the first product in a new line of analog and mixed-signal ICs for high-energy- and battery-powered devices such as hard disk drives (HDDs) and flash-based portable audio players, personal media players, and mini-disc playback. And recorders, PDAs, smart phones, digital video recorders and digital sound recorders.The CS42L51 delivers superior audio performance while providing system developers with a solution that maximizes battery life while minimizing end product size while simplifying digital audio recording and playback. The main feature of the CS42L51 over other competing IC products is that it requires only a single 1.8 V low-power supply to provide enough 46 mW of power for stereo 16-ohm headphones, providing consumers with an excellent listening experience.
With a self-generated on-chip negative supply voltage, the CS42L51 provides a ground-centric output that eliminates the need for expensive DC-capacitors that take up a lot of space. This not only reduces implementation costs, but also greatly simplifies product design and saves valuable board space.
In addition to high quality multi-bit Delta Sigma ADCs and DACs, the CS42L51 integrates a 3:1 stereo input multiplexer, programmable gain amplifier, stereo mic preamp and low noise bias supply, and automatic level control. A digital signal processing engine that provides functions such as bass/treble boost, limiter and tone generator. Its analog stereo output can be configured for HP or line output with digital volume and silent output control.
The CS42L51 has been sampling for customers and will begin mass production in the summer of 2005. The CODEC is available in a 32-pin QFN package and is priced at $3.95 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
