**Foreword:**
This evaluation focuses on a fanless combo, not a performance-based review.
**First, I want to commemorate the Sony VAIO NS50B/L notebook that has been with me for the past 10 years. From university days to now, after getting married and having kids, the only thing I've changed is the charger—no hardware issues at all. Even though I bought a new laptop, this one still works today. Unfortunately, such a great brand has been sold to the “widower.â€**

**Getting into the topic, when the first generation of Surface came out, I was really interested in the trend of 2-in-1 laptops. The idea of combining a regular notebook with a tablet was amazing. Today, the Surface Pro has matured in terms of performance, but its price remains high. When I was hesitating, Dell introduced a cost-effective option—the Ling Yue 12-5280, which is the focus of today’s review.**
**On January 1st, the product had over 1,100 sales on JD.com and a 99% positive rating, so the reputation is solid. There are already many reviews about its performance, so this article will skip the unboxing and basic testing, and instead focus on portability and the overall combo experience.**
**Machine Configuration**
Here, I mainly talk about what concerns me most: portability. The Ling Yue 12 comes in three basic configurations, and I chose the i5-7Y54 + 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD version.

**Design and Weight:**
The design is similar to the Surface Pro, and the fabric keyboard feels comfortable. Without the keyboard, it weighs 806g, and with it, it's 1.1kg—perfect for a lightweight, portable device.
**Screen:**
It has a 12.3-inch display with a resolution of 1980x1280. While not as high as top-tier models, it's acceptable for this screen size. The color gamut is officially advertised as 70.8% NTSC (73% online), close to 100% sRGB, and the quality is quite good.

**Cooling System:**
No fan, just passive cooling. Some may see this as a downside, but for a 2-in-1 laptop, it's actually a selling point. I previously owned a Lenovo Miix 520 with an 8th-gen i5, but some users reported fan noise issues. Fanless design reduces power consumption and noise, which I personally prefer. Of course, there's a trade-off: the CPU is an ultra-low voltage i5 (m5).
**Ports:**
Only two USB-C ports, no Thunderbolt 3 or standard USB-A ports. You need to use a docking station or external adapters. I use a USB-C card reader with a USB port, which helps transfer photos from my camera to the computer and phone.

**Battery Life:**
Officially, it can last up to 11 hours. In moderate use (like office work), I’ve used it for over 8 hours without issue. I also brought a 10th-generation portable power bank, which supports fast charging via DP protocol, though I haven’t needed it yet.
**Network Connectivity:**
Dell was one of the first to implement Intel’s Always Connected PC concept. With built-in LTE, you can insert a SIM card and access 4G internet. Though using a mobile hotspot is possible, once you experience always-on connectivity, it’s hard to go back. The free SIM card from JD.com offers 2GB for 2 months, but it’s not very cost-effective. Now, cheaper options like King Card or Ant Baoka are better choices.
**Touchpad and Input:**
There’s no fingerprint sensor, so Windows Hello isn’t very convenient. However, the touchpad supports various gestures, and the screen is touch-enabled, making mouse-free operation smooth. If you prefer a mouse, a Bluetooth model like the Logitech M590 works well.
**Overall, the Ling Yue 12 is a highly portable productivity tool, thanks to its slim design, long battery life, and ready-to-connect features.**
**Two-in-One Use Scenarios**
When it comes to productivity, 2-in-1 laptops like the Surface Pro are often compared to the iPad Pro. Personally, I think comparing iOS and Windows is unfair. While the iPad can do many things, it still has limitations that Windows can handle. Let’s explore the usage scenarios of the Win10 2-in-1.
**Reading and Notes:**
The 12.3-inch 3:2 screen closely matches the A4 paper ratio. Reading PDFs is comfortable, and using a stylus to mark up documents is easy. It’s ideal for students. Edge browser supports web annotations, and reading comics or e-books like Kindle is natural.

**Taking Notes:**
Win10 + stylus + OneNote is a perfect combination. You can take notes while watching lectures. The pen has 256 levels of pressure, which is good but not as advanced as the Surface Pro or iPad Pro. While electronic notes aren’t as convenient as paper, the combo of keyboard and pen makes note-taking efficient.

*(Note: This is just a test of the stylus; please ignore the messy handwriting.)*
**Travel Entertainment:**
On a plane, the small space makes it easy to remove the keyboard and watch videos while eating.
**Light Gaming:**
Even though the configuration is modest, it handles casual games like Galgame without issues. Removing the tablet allows you to relax in bed, and touch control is smooth.
**Android Emulator:**
If you need apps like Mi, you’ll have to use an emulator. Buying a Win10 tablet and an Android tablet separately is not practical, so this is a useful feature.
**Other Use Cases:**
If you have more ideas, feel free to share them!
**Recommended UWP Apps:**
- **Xodo**: Free PDF reader and annotation app.
- **NetEase Cloud Music**: Recognized as the best UWP music app.
- **Bilibili**: Better third-party client.
- **Chinese University MOOC**: Great for online classes.
- **TV**: Offers a wide range of channels, including HD content.
**In conclusion, there's no perfect laptop—each has its own purpose and target audience. For those on a budget who still want decent performance, it’s a great choice. For those who don’t mind spending more, top-end models are better. For those who want high performance, portability, and a 2-in-1 design, the Surface Book 2 15" is the way to go.**
**The Ling Yue 12 seems to be aimed at Surface Pro fans, suitable for students and business professionals who value portability over gaming performance. I hope UWP apps continue to improve and that more excellent 2-in-1 laptops emerge in the future.**
