Introduction to Control Lighting System at Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport, UK

Terminal 5 of London Heathrow Airport uses the world's largest DALI lighting control system consisting of 2.600 three-in-one sensors and 120,000 luminaires with DALI digital dimming ballasts. At the same time, the emergency lighting system of Terminal 5 of London Heathrow Airport also applied DALI lighting control and monitoring, and thus won the world's largest single DALI emergency lighting control system.

New terminal building in Europe's largest airport

In terms of number of passengers, London Heathrow Airport is the largest airport in Europe. The main building of Terminal 5 with a total cost of 5.6 billion euros is 4 times longer than the football field. The football field is 3 times wider and has two auxiliary buildings, each of which is more than 440 meters long. The lighting control system designed by Andromeda Telematics Ltd. of the United Kingdom is the world's largest DALI lighting solution. Project manager Graham Boaler said: "This huge project alone means that it is a huge challenge."

Among the 120,000 lamps from Thorn, Tridonic's digital dimmable ballast PCA EXCEL one4all Ip is equipped. Combined with 2.600 3-in-1 sensors, they provide a solid foundation for lighting requirements that meet the highest lighting energy efficiency and sustainability. In addition, the application of the project's emergency lighting system also broke the record. With the help of Tridonic's EM PRO emergency lighting, the world's largest single DALI emergency lighting system was built and the lighting system was supervised and controlled by the KNX Building Management System. In this new terminal, 2,900 intelligent switch interfaces and KNX/DALI gateways are installed, all communicating via the KNX control bus.

Energy-saving new terminal

Compared with buildings of the same size, the final energy saving ratio of Terminal 5 of London Heathrow Airport is 45%. How is this energy saving ratio achieved? Many requirements are put forward for this owner, such as at the best cost. Provide appropriate lighting at all times; maximize the use of natural light; replace the light source and maintain it as efficiently as possible; and test the emergency lighting system as often as needed.

It turns out that DALI's lighting intelligent control system can meet all the above requirements, and through the "Open Protocol" way to make the system more compatible, more efficient and more effective. The lighting control function of Terminal 5 of London Heathrow Airport is a combination of manual switches and pre-programmed lighting scenes. In addition, the DALI system monitors all luminaires in order to make real-time and correct judgments on lamp run time and lamp replacement indications, as well as to provide energy assessments in any designated area within Terminal 5. If the business function area changes requirements, the DALI system can meet the needs of the new control functions in software mode without changing the line. In addition, for ease of use, all data from the DALI system is fed back to the building integrated system platform via the TCP/IP platform.

Modern emergency lighting system

One of the main technological innovations for Terminal 5 is the full integration of split and central battery emergency lighting systems. Testing and monitoring with DALI lighting controls eliminates system duplication and resolves any coordination issues. Tridonic's EM Pro DALI emergency lighting control unit provides comprehensive control of emergency testing and reporting functions. The emergency lighting automated test function with DALI eliminates the large amount of visual inspection and expensive costs required by conventional systems. As the Terminal 5 is very large, the maintenance cost savings will be considerable. In addition, EM PRO emergency lighting with EM SELFTEST module functionality facilitates equipment management, especially for very large lighting systems. Martyn Suggett, director of system integration technology, said: "The DALI intelligent lighting control system for Terminal 5 was quickly recognized as the new benchmark for DALI technology in the industry."

(The project won the 2008 World DALI First Prize)
