China will become the world's largest Internet of Things market in 2025, followed by the United States

The development of the Internet of Things has been widely recognized in the industry. According to Cisco research, with the rapid development of the Internet of Things, global IP traffic will reach three times in the next four years. In addition, by 2020, there will be 26 billion connected devices worldwide.

Today, the latest data from market research firm Machina Research shows that the number of global IoT connections and IoT revenue will triple between 2015 and 2025, providing telecom operators with a chance to make money, especially those A telecom operator with experience in the field of enterprise IT services.

In 2015, the number of IoT connections worldwide was 6 billion. According to expectations, this number will increase to 27 billion by 2025. In the same period, IoT revenue opportunities will increase from $750 billion to $3 trillion, of which $1.3 trillion in total revenue will come directly from end users through device, connectivity and application revenue. The rest will come from upstream and downstream resources, including application development, system integration, hosting and data monetization.

Although relatively pure income from pure connectivity – $50 billion in 2025, Machina Research CEO Matt Hatton said that telecom operators' performance in market share will far exceed the expectations of many industry observers. $50 billion is "a big market full of change," Matt Hatton said, but he pointed out that telecom operators will still focus on a wider range of opportunities, such as providing practical IoT applications.

“Some operators, such as Vodafone, are actively developing IoT applications, while other operators, such as Tele 2, are more focused on horizontal connectivity.” He added that related services, including data monetization and system integration, Represents a huge opportunity.

"People tend to think that telecom operators have no advantage in terminal services, but this is somewhat general," Matt Hatton said. "For example, although they may not be very good at developing their own pet trackers, the Internet of Things is mostly interesting. Things have a heavy corporate inclination, and telecom operators have done a good job in providing diversified enterprise IT services."

According to Machina Research's forecast, by 2025, 72% of all IoT connections will use short-range transmission technologies such as WiFi and Zigbee. IoT cellular connectivity will reach 22 billion by 2025 (the figure at the end of 2015 was 334 million), most of which will be based on LTE. Connected vehicles will be a key area, and 45% of cellular IoT connections will be in this area in 2025. Low-power wide-area coverage technologies, including Sigfox, LoRa, and LTE-NB1, will account for 11% of IoT connections in 2025.

China will lead the global Internet of Things market in 2025, but the United States is comparable to China in terms of IoT connections - China accounts for 21% of global IoT connections, and the United States accounts for 20%; but the United States has greater revenue share than China. The United States is 22%, while China is 19%. The third largest Internet of Things market in 2025 will be Japan, where Japan will account for 7% of global IoT connectivity and 6% of Internet of Things revenue.

Machina Research data shows that by 2025, the Internet of Things will generate more than 2 terabytes of data, mainly from consumer electronics.
