Although some smartphones already support some instant messaging software, most of the smartphone customers are business people, and many of the young people interested in these instant messaging software do not have such mobile phones. Therefore, portable products such as PMP support instant messaging software is also an important feature.

Next generation PMP solution

Relative to MPEG2/4, algorithms such as RMVB, Flash, H.264, and AVS are more complicated, and the performance requirements of the processor are higher. For large resolutions, such as VGA (640 x 480), D1 (720 x 480), there are few decodings that can support H.264 or RMVB in current PMP schemes. Recently, Texas Instruments (TI) introduced the DaVinci-based TMS320DM6441 platform, which is one of the best solutions for the next generation of PMP.

The DM6441 is a dual-core SoC with ARM9, TMS320C64x+ DSP core and video/image coprocessor, which is a chip developed by DaVinci technology based on portable applications, as shown in Figure 1. ARM9 is ARM's 32-bit RISC (Reduced Instruction Set) processing core, supports JAVA, and supports a variety of advanced operating systems, such as Linux, WinCE and so on. The C64+ core DSP is a high-performance DSP core from TI that can handle a large number of operations, enabling H.264, MPEG2, MPEG4 or VC1 video performance at 30 frames per second, and enabling RMVB playback at larger resolutions, and AVS algorithm. The programmability of DSP gives users the flexibility to develop and help developers design low-cost portable entertainment products. The video/image coprocessor complements the DSP to speed up and improve the performance of the algorithm.

The DM6441 has a video processing subsystem including a video processing front end and a back end, a digital video interface, a CCD/CMOS interface, a preview engine, a hardware scaler, support for multiple LCD screens, an integrated video encoder and four DACs to support simulation. The DM6441 also integrates the major peripherals required for today's portable media applications, including multiple memory card interfaces (MMC/SD/SDIO/CF/MS/MS Pro), ATA hard drive interface, USB 2.0 high-speed Host and Device. Power consumption is an indicator of great concern for portable devices. The DM6441 has a variety of power-saving modes that enable it to meet the power requirements of portable devices while providing high performance. It has two power modes: 1.2V full speed mode (513MHz DSP and 256MHz ARM) or 1.05V power saving mode (405MHz DSP and 202MHz ARM). When the application does not require high processing performance, the power-saving operating mode can be used to reduce power consumption. The DM6441 also has a clock gate control function that can also turn off its internal clocks when they are not in use. Since the power domains of the ARM and DSP cores are isolated from each other, the DSP power can be turned off when the DSP is not used, further saving power. The DM6441's dual-supply mode, clock gating, and power-domain isolation combine to significantly reduce power consumption, compared to other products on the DaVinci platform, such as the DM6446, which can save 35% of the power.

   In addition to the DM6441 hardware platform, Texas Instruments also provides some audio and video algorithms, and cooperates with MontaVista on Linux based on the DaVinci platform. In order to bring complete and complete solutions to PMP manufacturers, TI is also committed to working with third-party developers at home and abroad. Third parties can provide more audio and video algorithms, even complete PMP reference solutions to meet the needs of various developers.

Figure 2 shows a PMP solution with DM6441 as the hardware platform. Due to the programmability and scalability of the DM6441, developers can add or reduce mobile TV, WiFi, GPS and other functions as needed to meet the needs of different markets.
