According to recent reports from international media, Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla's new city navigation and mapping engine—dubbed "Light Years"—is set to be completed with an early 2018 software update. This major development marks a significant step forward in Tesla's efforts to enhance the driving experience through advanced mapping technology.
The new system, officially named "Tesla Maps," has already sparked interest among tech enthusiasts. A well-known Tesla hacker, verygreen, managed to crack into the vehicle and shared images of the updated map interface. These visuals give us a glimpse into what users can expect from the upcoming release.
The first image shows the map at maximum zoom level, while the other two images display the same location but with the new vector-based maps. Interestingly, the Google Maps app is still visible on the center console, but verygreen claims that the new navigation system on the dashboard appears more "fluid and clear" compared to the current version.
Although Tesla has been developing this new navigation engine for some time, the differences from the existing system are not immediately obvious. However, Musk previously stated that the new system would offer a noticeable improvement over the current one. Recently, he tweeted that the new engine is "almost done," indicating that the final phase of development is underway.
Despite the progress, Tesla still faces several software challenges. Some users have reported recurring issues, even though the development has been ongoing for years. To address these concerns, Tesla launched a beta test last week, offering users access to new features and an improved neural network. It seems that a major software update is just around the corner, promising an enhanced and more intuitive navigation experience for Tesla drivers.
