According to recent foreign media reports, Elon Musk revealed that Tesla's new city navigation and map engine—called "Light Years"—is set to be completed with a software update in early 2018. This new system, named "Tesla Maps," has sparked significant interest among car enthusiasts and tech followers alike.
A well-known Tesla hacker, verygreen, recently cracked the vehicle’s system and shared images of the updated interface. The first image shows the map at maximum zoom, while the other two display the same location using the new vector-based maps. Interestingly, the Google Maps app is still visible on the center console, but verygreen noted that the new dashboard navigation appears more fluid and visually sharper than the current version.
Although Tesla has been developing this new navigation engine for some time, the differences from the existing system are not immediately obvious. However, Musk previously stated that the new system would offer a significant improvement over the current one. Recently, he tweeted that the new engine is "almost done," indicating that the final stages of development are underway.
Despite the progress, Musk also mentioned that several software bugs still need to be resolved. Although the project has been in development for years, some users have reported similar issues over the past few months. To address these challenges, Tesla launched a beta software test last week, offering users access to new features and an enhanced neural network.
With these updates on the horizon, it seems that Tesla owners can soon expect a major software upgrade, bringing improved navigation and a more seamless user experience. As the company continues to push the boundaries of automotive technology, the future of Tesla’s in-car systems looks promising.
