Panasonic plans to start producing LED lamps in China

According to Dow Jones Newswires' report on December 28, Panasonic Corp. will begin producing LED lamps in China next year to sell on the local market.

Production is expected to begin as early as the current fiscal year ending in March, and the production group in Beijing and Hangzhou will convert part of the production line. As prices drop, some products may use contractors. Products, including LED-embedded lamps, light bulbs and chandeliers, will be sold through Matsushita's lighting equipment products in China and local large retailers.

Matsushita Electric Works Co., Ltd. (Panasonic Electric Works Co., Ltd.) is Matsushita's wholly-owned subsidiary, and Kuniaki Matsukage, a senior managing director of Matsushita Electric, said that the use of LED lamps has grown faster than they expected.

The Chinese government is promoting the use of energy-saving luminaires through subsidies and other measures. As a result, Panasonic sees China as the market second only to Japan. However, the price competition is relatively intense. It is said that there are as many as 5,000 to 10,000 companies producing LEC lighting products. Panasonic decided to start local production in order to increase cost competitiveness.

Panasonic and Matsushita Electric will continue to operate their own lighting equipment business separately, but their operations will soon be integrated because the two companies will be merged next month. Matsushita Group plans to generate 15.5 billion yen in revenue by using LED lighting in China in fiscal 2015.
