German auto market survey: 2030 private cars account for the mainstream auto-driving cold market

In the ever-evolving automotive industry, the future of transportation is being shaped by a combination of innovation, consumer preferences, and technological advancements. According to a recent report from LeaseTrend and Auto Bank, HLA, a market research and consulting firm, private cars will remain the primary focus of development even as autonomy and flexibility in transportation grow significantly by 2030. This conclusion was drawn from a survey of nearly 1,000 German car owners, highlighting key trends and expectations for the next decade. The study reveals that 64% of German car owners believe they will continue to drive their own vehicles over the next ten years. In contrast, only about 22% of respondents are open to using connected traffic systems or self-driving vehicles by 2030. This suggests that personal ownership remains a strong preference among many drivers, despite the growing interest in alternative mobility solutions. When it comes to fuel types, the future looks electric. Nearly 60% of respondents expect an increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, while only around 16% think diesel vehicles will still be widely used. Among those planning to buy new cars, 42% are considering hybrid models, with 38% leaning toward fully electric options. This shift reflects a broader movement towards sustainability and energy efficiency. Despite the rise of EVs, traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles are not yet obsolete. Many car owners still see value in these technologies, especially as they continue to evolve. However, nearly half of the respondents predict that some major cities may ban non-electric vehicles within the next 13 years. While the debate over diesel engines persists, they still hold a significant place in the automotive landscape. Traffic congestion and environmental concerns are also top of mind for many drivers. Over 68% of respondents believe urban traffic will become more crowded, leading to increased pollution and noise. However, 52% think that connected vehicles could help improve traffic flow and reduce these negative impacts, making the future of mobility more efficient and sustainable. Autonomous vehicles, on the other hand, face mixed reactions. Although nearly 50% of respondents believe car manufacturers will offer autonomous options by 2030, only 27% are willing to purchase them. A significant portion—37%—say they won’t buy such vehicles at all. Many consumers are hesitant due to cost concerns, with 54% unwilling to spend more on autonomous technology. This skepticism may slow down the widespread adoption of self-driving systems. Despite these challenges, driver assistance systems are gaining popularity. Most car owners believe that connected vehicles will enhance traffic conditions and improve overall driving experiences. At the same time, many still value the hands-on experience of driving and don’t want to lose that thrill. Looking ahead, traditional automakers like BMW, GM, and Volkswagen are expected to maintain a strong presence in the market, with 67% of respondents believing they will dominate by 2030. Meanwhile, Chinese electric vehicle companies are seen as having significant growth potential, with one-third of respondents expressing optimism about their future. However, internet giants like Amazon and Google, which have entered the autonomous vehicle space, are met with less enthusiasm.
