The Volvo XC60 is set to be replaced in the second half of this year, with the new model expected to be launched in December. This upcoming version can be considered as a smaller sibling of the XC90. Big Lion has always believed that Volvo owners are thoughtful and stylish individuals. The new generation of the XC60 will come with a starting price of 358,900 yuan, making it an attractive option for those looking for premium features at a reasonable cost.
At the core of the new XC60 is Volvo’s flexible SPA platform, which allows for versatile chassis configurations suitable for mid-size and larger vehicles. This platform enables greater flexibility in adjusting interior space based on the vehicle's design and function. In addition to the XC60, the upcoming S60 and V60 models will also be built on this platform. This shared architecture not only helps reduce development costs but also ensures a consistent and upgraded experience across the entire lineup.
Technologically, the new XC60 supports various powertrain strategies, including automatic start-stop systems, hybrid options, and full electric drive. Weight reduction efforts have also been made, with the use of high-strength boron steel enhancing both the rigidity and safety of the vehicle. This advancement ensures better protection for passengers in case of impact.
The exterior design of the new XC60 comes in two versions: the standard and the R-Design sports edition. Both styles will be available after domestic production, though the exact dimensions of the extended version remain unclear. The car will feature “Quake’s Hammer†LED headlights and Viking Tomahawk taillights, giving it a bold and modern look. The R-Design version stands out with its large air intake, making it even more appealing to enthusiasts.
Inside, the new XC60 mirrors the design of the S90, offering a Nordic-inspired interior that blends simplicity with elegance. The center console is covered in soft materials, and the stitching adds a refined touch. A new City Safety system enhances driver assistance, while the full LCD instrument cluster and large multimedia display provide an advanced tech experience. The top trim also includes a Baohua Weijian audio system for premium sound quality.
However, there are some drawbacks to the Nordic design. While the seats are soft and well-supported, they are slightly narrow. It would be great if the domestic version offered wider seating. The rear seat backrest angle and length are optimized for long trips, reducing fatigue. Additional comfort features like front and rear seat heating and four-zone automatic climate control are included, though seat ventilation would be a welcome addition.
In terms of performance, the new XC60 offers three powertrain options: T5, T6, and T8. All use a 2.0L turbocharged engine, with T5 and T6 offering different power outputs. The T8 version adds an electric motor, creating a hybrid system. The T5 produces 254 horsepower (187 kW) and 350 Nm of torque, while the T6 delivers 320 horsepower (235 kW) and 400 Nm. All models are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
One of the most significant upgrades is the chassis. The new XC60 features a front double wishbone suspension, which provides better handling compared to the previous MacPherson setup. The rear uses a multi-link independent suspension with a leaf spring made from transverse glass fiber. This innovative design reduces weight by 12%–15%, saves space, and improves interior room, making the cabin more comfortable for passengers.
