Chip giant Intel announced on January 3 that it agreed to acquire a 15% stake in German digital map company HERE, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of this year. Intel also announced the appointment of Doug Davis as a member of the HERE Supervisory Board, which is currently the head of Intel's Automated Driving Division.
Intel said the two companies will collaborate on R&D activities required for real-time updates of HD maps, which can be applied to autonomous vehicles. In addition, the two companies plan to jointly explore the strategic opportunities offered by the growing number of computing devices that use local data.
It is reported that the current technology allows users to position the vehicle within meters, and the next generation map technology HERE is building is expected to be accurate to centimeters.
Prior to the end of 2016, Beijing Siweitu New Technology Co., Ltd. and Tencent Holdings had just announced that they would jointly acquire a 10% stake in HERE in conjunction with Singapore Government Investment Corporation (GIC). The transaction is expected to be completed in the first half of this year.
At the end of 2015, Nokia transferred its digital map business HERE to a consortium of German automakers Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen for a price of 2.5 billion euros. The latter hopes to use this acquisition to build an Internet platform for autonomous driving technology. In the global digital map field, HERE is one of the few companies that can compete with Google Maps, and has a close monopoly in the field of car navigation.
