According to foreign media reports, Matsushita is planning to expand cooperation with electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla. Panasonic has previously launched a battery business partnership with Tesla, and the next two companies will cooperate to develop driverless technology. The center of Panasonic's current development strategy is automotive applications. The company is focusing more on corporate customers and reducing their reliance on low-margin consumer-grade products. Low-cost Asian competitors are hitting Japanese companies in this area.
Panasonic is the exclusive battery supplier for Tesla Model S, Model X and Future Model 3. In the construction plan of Tesla's $5 billion battery factory, Matsushita plans to invest $1.6 billion.
Panasonic CEO Jin Heyihong said: "We are very interested in Tesla's driverless system. We hope to expand cooperation between the two parties to jointly develop such equipment, such as sensors."
One product that the two parties may cooperate with is an organic light-guide film CMOS image sensor. Panasonic is currently developing this product. Jin Heyi Hong said that this sensor can quickly sense moving objects while ensuring no distortion.
Panasonic hopes to add such technology to the car. In the fiscal year ending March 2019, Matsushita’s target annual revenue was 2 trillion yen ($17.43 billion), up from 1.3 trillion in the fiscal year ending March 2016. JPY.
