Samsung challenges the LED market, layout Micro-LED high-end TV

A recent report from South Korea shows that Samsung is stepping up its development of TVs based on Micro-LED technology. As a pioneer in Micro-LED technology, Sony launched "Crystal LED Display" at the International Consumer Electronics Show in 2012. Samsung is not to be outdone. At the end of March this year, a display screen dedicated to cinemas was released, called Cinema Screen. The company currently focuses on QD-LED high-end TVs, but is looking for alternative technologies because it cannot increase its market share in this area.

Samsung is said to be looking for several alternatives, one of which is the acquisition of PlayNitride in Taiwan, which was first seen in OLED-Info in April 2017. Samsung's goal is to first use Micro-LED technology for cinema LED screens, and then for home TVs.

There are still technical challenges before Micro-LEDs really enter the TV and mobile applications market. Some insiders estimate that it will be at least until 2019.

Samsung's share of the high-end TV market dropped from 57% in 2015 to 20% in 2016, as its QD-LED failed to compete with LG's OLED TV. LG's market share increased from 17.5% in 2015 to 43% in 2016.
