Society owes China 40 million engineers a holiday

In a speech, former German President Herzog once said, “To maintain economic competitiveness, Germany doesn’t need more doctors, but more technicians.” These technicians refer to engineers who support the “Made in Germany” philosophy. At this year’s National People's Congress and CPPCC meetings, CPPCC member Gu Ming proposed the establishment of “Engineering Day,” emphasizing that fostering loyalty, dedication, struggle, and unity within the engineering community is at the core of this initiative. Gu Ming believes that recognizing and celebrating engineers is essential for promoting their values and contributions. This idea resonates with the global trend of valuing skilled professionals and innovation-driven development. In China, the engineering profession plays a vital role in the country’s technological advancement and industrial growth. The importance of engineers in national economic development cannot be overstated. President Xi Jinping has emphasized that “development is the first priority, talent is the number one resource, and innovation is the primary driving force.” Over the years, China has made remarkable progress in science and technology, with achievements in automobiles, aircraft, ships, satellites, high-speed rail, and more—all driven by the efforts of Chinese engineers. Engineers are the backbone of China’s modernization, continuously pushing boundaries in fields like quantum communication, high-speed rail, and nuclear power. Their work has placed China at the forefront of global engineering and technology. As Meng Fanchao, the chief designer of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, once stated, engineers represent the hard power of a nation, and China relies on them to lead the way. Globally, there is a growing shortage of engineers, with 40% of employers struggling to find qualified candidates. China already has over 40 million engineering professionals, creating the conditions for an “engineering bonus” that could drive future economic growth. This shift from the traditional demographic dividend to an engineering-driven model will play a key role in advancing the Belt and Road Initiative and building a shared human destiny. Despite their critical role, engineers often go unrecognized. Media attention tends to focus on entertainment stars rather than those who build the infrastructure of society. Programs like “Great Country Craftsmen” and “I Love Inventions” highlight the spirit of engineering, yet many young people still lack appreciation for the profession. Surveys show that only 15% of university students aim to become top experts, and over 80% of engineers feel their social status is low or average. This lack of recognition risks weakening the next generation of engineers. With only 10% of students considering engineers as their role models, it’s clear that more efforts are needed to elevate their status and inspire future talent. Currently, China celebrates several professional days, such as Nurses’ Day, Doctors’ Day, Teachers’ Day, and Journalists’ Day. Engineers, being the largest professional group in the country, deserve similar recognition. With over 40 million engineers, establishing an “Engineering Day” is not just a suggestion—it’s a necessity. Human civilization advances through innovation, and engineers are the driving force behind this evolution. The proposal for “Engineering Day” aligns with the goals of “Made in China 2025,” acting as a catalyst for the manufacturing industry. Prof. Gu Ming’s initiative is a beacon of inspiration, reflecting societal values and encouraging more people to join the ranks of engineers. It’s a step toward honoring the unseen heroes who build the world we live in and ensuring that their contributions are recognized and celebrated.
