This year marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone’s release. In today’s world where dual-SIM functionality has become a standard feature for Android phones, Apple still clings to its single-SIM design. Maybe we can only hope for a change this year with the iPhone 8.
Despite this, Apple’s smartphones remain among the best in the market, particularly when it comes to software applications and gaming. It's tough for many to completely abandon iOS in favor of Android. Carrying two phones for work might be a lot of people’sæ— å¥ˆ solution.
Back in 2015, I came across a gadget that allowed an iPhone to have dual-SIM functionality. By plugging in a SIM card and using Bluetooth to connect with a mobile phone, it essentially gave the iPhone dual-SIM capability.
Recently, I got my hands on a newer version of this gadget, called Double Share Number Pro. It’s an upgraded product that addresses many of the issues of the first generation. At this stage, it could make iPhones truly dual-SIM capable. If you’re looking for such a gadget, Double Share Number Pro is worth considering.
Unboxing:
The packaging for the Double Share Number Pro is quite unique, using a stamped tin box instead of the previous generation’s flimsy foam bag. This feels more premium.
On the back of the box, you’ll find details about the product model and related information. It also includes a non-certified certification number: CMIIT ID 2016DP5857. As a device with wireless transmission capabilities, it needs to pass SRRC approval, so there’s no need to worry about its legitimacy.
Inside, you’ll find the main unit, a description, and a Nano-to-Micro SIM card tray.
The Double Share Number Pro looks like an oversized USB drive at first glance. Its pure white shell has only one physical button, which is used to reset the device information by pressing and holding for 5 seconds.
Next to the button, there are LED indicators showing WiFi connection status, device information, and normal operation.
At the top, you'll find the product model number WF-01, along with some environmental certifications.
It should be noted that the Double Share Number Pro only supports Micro SIM, and most modern phones use Nano SIMs, so a Nano-to-Micro SIM card tray is included.
Currently, the Double Share Pro only supports China Mobile and China Unicom SIM cards, and it would be great if future versions supported China Telecom as well.
Installation and Activation:
Setting up the Double Share Pro is straightforward. Just plug it into a USB power source, then connect your phone to it. Due to its larger size, it occupies about two USB ports, which could be improved in future models.
If you purchase two units, you can download two separate apps: “Double Share Number Pro†and “Double Share Number Pro-Extended Version.†This allows an iPhone to be paired with two Dual Share Pro devices, enabling three SIM cards—two from the Dual Share devices and one from the iPhone itself. This setup is referred to as “three cards, three waits.â€
The main reason for having two separate apps is to avoid confusion between the two numbers. Different ringtones and app names help keep the two phone numbers distinct.
The initial setup process is simple. Insert a SIM card into the device, connect to its WiFi hotspot, and input your home WiFi password. Once connected, the setup within the app takes about a minute to complete.
When the three indicators on the Double Share Pro turn solid blue, it means the device is activated. From there, you can make calls normally through the app.
The software operates similarly to Android’s third-party dialer apps. The bottom bar includes familiar functions like dialing, T9 dialing, and contact search. Communication records and text messages are accessible within the app, and you can edit contacts directly.
Actual Experience:
The working principle of the Double Share Pro isn’t complex. Essentially, it acts as a “signal amplifier†for the SIM card. The hardware authenticates the SIM card and communicates with the operator’s base station via the internet. The communication content is then relayed through the network and the mobile app.
This setup not only allows single-SIM phones to mimic dual-SIM functionality but also solves the issue of losing access to your domestic operator’s SIM card when traveling abroad. Theoretically, as long as you have a network connection, you can use your own SIM card anywhere in the world without worrying about international roaming charges.
However, the Double Share Pro isn’t without flaws. Since it relies on the internet to transmit data, there’s about a one-second delay when making calls or sending/receiving texts compared to traditional phones. But this is negligible unless you're testing specifically for delays.
To summarize:
Compared to the previous generation, the Pro version of Double Share Number completely changes our perception of iPhone dual-SIM accessories. In my experience, no other iPhone dual-SIM accessory is as convenient or reliable.
All you need to do is plug it into a stable WiFi environment and power source, and you can easily enable dual-SIM functionality on your iPhone. This is especially useful for those who primarily use an assistant SIM card for work.
My mobile data usage is minimal, so I don't worry about the Double Share Number consuming data. Plus, we have a stable WiFi connection at work.
If you’re carrying two phones just to meet your dual-SIM needs, the Double Share Number Pro is worth trying.
Curiosity/Questions:
1. Since the Double Share Number Pro stores its SIM card in a stable WiFi environment, and my physical phone doesn’t have a SIM card, does this mean that even if I use this device to make calls, it’s impossible to locate me using traditional SIM card-based methods? Can experts weigh in?
2. Does the working mechanism of Double Share Number Pro affect existing mobile operators’ inter-provincial and international roaming services? While this feature saves users money, will it face bans once it becomes popular?
Who is this product suitable for?
1. Frequent travelers and businesspeople who often travel to Hong Kong and Macau.
2. People living abroad who need to communicate regularly with their home country.
3. Professionals who want to bring only one iPhone but need multiple SIM cards for work.
Future Improvements:
1. Currently, the Double Share Number relies heavily on the network. In weak network conditions, it may result in missed calls. Ideally, the device should automatically switch to the physical SIM card if the network is poor, ensuring seamless communication.
2. The app lacks an easy way to search for FAQs. Users must contact customer service via WeChat for assistance. Adding an H5 FAQ section would make troubleshooting easier.
3. The Double Share Number Pro currently only supports China Mobile and China Unicom numbers. Supporting China Telecom numbers would be beneficial given the number of telecom users.
4. The size of the Double Share Pro could be optimized. It occupies two USB ports, which can be inconvenient. Hopefully, this will be addressed in future iterations.
