This article is based on personal experience and opinions regarding the ASRock Phantom Dance mouse, which was gifted alongside an ASRock Z270 motherboard. Initially, it seemed promising, especially since the mouse came with a unique leopard-print design that stood out from the crowd. However, as I delved deeper into its features, my expectations began to wane.
The mouse's information is quite scarce, with no detailed product pages even on the ASRock official site. It feels like a rare find, almost experimental, given the lack of widespread availability. Online reviews suggest that this mouse might not be intended for commercial sale but rather as a promotional item. Despite the impressive number of reviews on platforms like JD.com, I personally don't find much value in it, either in terms of functionality or aesthetics. That said, it’s interesting to note that many users seem satisfied with the mouse, often praising its bundled nature with the motherboard.
On JD.com, the mouse currently has its own dedicated product page, priced at 99 yuan, which seems reasonable. Comparatively, similar models on Taobao are listed at over 199 yuan, making this offer seem like a steal. However, upon closer inspection, the packaging raises some concerns. The box itself is oddly shaped, resembling a diamond, and is covered in domestic branding elements. The design feels gimmicky, with phrases like "6D optical gaming mouse" printed on it, which seems exaggerated and unnecessary.
Inside, the packaging is standard, featuring transparent plastic. The mouse specifications claim high-quality materials such as "space-grade alloy," which feels like hyperbole considering the price point. There are no additional accessories, except for a decent quality braided cable that feels slightly stiff.
The mouse itself measures 123x71x42mm, making it a medium-sized device with a weight of 162g, significantly heavier than average mice. The extra weight is due to the large back shell designed for light transmission, which consists of an outer black layer and an inner light-transmitting layer. Additionally, the bottom of the mouse includes a piece of aluminum for aesthetic purposes, though it’s not particularly noticeable from regular angles.
The design is symmetrically ambidextrous, catering to both right and left-handed users. While this is convenient for lefties, the overall design lacks innovation and feels overly familiar. The shell is made of ABS with a textured finish that wears well, remaining oil-free after six months of use, which is commendable.
The scroll wheel is large and comes with four DPI adjustment buttons. According to the JD page, the maximum DPI is 2400, with each switch accompanied by a tri-color lighting effect. The so-called "pliers" design at the front of the wheel is an odd choice, though it does prevent the rubber from wearing down easily.
Side buttons are present on both the forward and backward sides, offering a tactile response that works fine for general use. The ASRock logo on the side is unremarkable. The bottom reveals a supposed "aerospace-grade" aluminum plate, though it adds little practical benefit beyond weight.
The mouse uses an Avago A5050 engine, which is considered a basic entry-level sensor. Its interpolated 2400 DPI falls short compared to native 2000 DPI sensors like the A3050. The side and DPI buttons utilize unknown brands, which could affect reliability over time.
In summary, the ASRock Phantom Dance is a budget mouse that struggles to stand out in a crowded market. Its design fails to differentiate itself from cheaper alternatives, and its performance metrics align with entry-level standards. While the build quality is decent, with a durable finish, it’s hard to recommend over similarly priced competitors. At 99 yuan, it’s a decent deal if you’re getting it as a freebie with a motherboard, but standalone, it might not justify its cost. Still, the lack of oiling after six months of use is a pleasant surprise, showcasing the durability of its construction.
