On December 11, 2009, two years after the groundbreaking ceremony was held in July 2007, the world's most advanced LED chip factory has completed the final installation work, and the test phase has been successfully completed. At the chip manufacturing plant in Penang, the German company Osram became the first LED manufacturer to have high-volume chip production facilities in Europe and Asia. Osram's main plant in Regensburg, Germany, was expanded in 2008 , and the Penang new plant is a powerful complement to it. In response to the current rapid growth in demand for high-quality LEDs in the LED market, this move will enable OSRAM to respond flexibly at competitive prices.
LED chips are ready to go, and will become the core products of the future lighting system. Key indicators for the newly completed cutting-edge LED chip manufacturing plant include tens of millions of euros of investment, 35,000 m2 of factory space and more than 220 new jobs. As the construction phase has been completed, a 4 inch wafer-based indium gallium nitride (InGaN) semiconductor chip has also established a manufacturing process, and the new plant is currently in production. These chips form the basis of blue, green and white LEDs and are used primarily in architectural and general lighting, display backlighting and mobile terminal equipment. This LED chip factory has created about 220 new jobs for Penang. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors employs 4,400 people worldwide, of which approximately 2,600 are in Malaysia . The opening ceremony of the new chip factory in Penang will be held next spring.
