Japan plans to suspend production of incandescent lamps in the next three years

According to Japanese media reports, incandescent lamps, which are widely used in home and office lighting, not only consume large amounts of electricity, but also have low energy efficiency. As a countermeasure against climate warming, the Japanese government has decided to suspend the production and sale of incandescent lamps in the country in the next few years, and gradually promote the use of fluorescent lamps that consume a lot of power.

It is reported that Japan will suspend the production of incandescent lamps in the next three years. According to the Kyoto Protocol's requirements for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Japanese government will strengthen the implementation of greenhouse gas emission reduction measures in the home and office sectors starting in 2008. If all households use fluorescent lamps, their greenhouse gas emission reductions are equivalent to 1.3% of total household greenhouse gas emissions, totaling about 2 million tons. However, since the price of fluorescent lamps used in households is more than 10 times more expensive than incandescent lamps, it is difficult to promote the use of fluorescent lamps.

On the other hand, from an international perspective, the UK has made it clear that the use of incandescent lamps will be phased out from 2008 to 2011, while limiting the use of incandescent lamps. Japan, which is known to be the world leader in energy conservation, intends to switch from using incandescent lamps to using fluorescent lamps by suspending the production of incandescent lamps.

According to estimates by large appliance manufacturers, incandescent lamps consume about five times as much power as fluorescent lamps, and an incandescent lamp uses 10,000 hours of electricity for about 10,000 yen. Fluorescent lamps have a lifespan of 10 times that of incandescent lamps, so using fluorescent lamps is still cost-effective. The Japanese government intends to conduct this publicity through joint efforts with manufacturers to gain consumer understanding and support for the promotion of fluorescent lamps.
