Japan strives to regain the world's first throne in solar power generation

Japan used to be the world's largest country in solar power generation, but this status was replaced by Germany three years ago. In this regard, Japan is not willing to lag behind, the government is considering a subsidy system for universal solar power generation, in order to regain the world's number one solar power generation.

As a countermeasure against global warming, Prime Minister Fukuda proposed to increase solar power generation in Japan to 40 times by 2030.

At present, most solar power generation units have a power generation capacity of about 3 kilowatts, which can provide about half of the annual household electricity consumption. When the amount of sunshine is sufficient to generate more electricity, surplus electricity may be sold to the power company.

Japan began to popularize solar power generation in the early 1990s, when the price of solar installations was over 10 million yen. Therefore, since 1994, the Japanese government has issued subsidies to families who install solar power generation devices. The standard is 900,000 yen per kilowatt. It has been welcomed by the public and the installation of solar power generation devices has become fashionable.

Later, the price of solar power plants dropped to about one-fifth, and the subsidy also decreased. By 2005, it was 20,000 yen per kilowatt, and finally the subsidy was stopped. The popularity of solar power has therefore been affected.

In response to previous experiences in popularizing solar power generation, the Japanese government proposed to encourage the spread of solar power generation devices by granting subsidies and tax incentives.

At present, the standard of subsidies has not yet been determined, but the government has an annual budget of more than 10 billion yen. Industry insiders pointed out that the standard of subsidies should be at least 100,000 yen per kilowatt. If the amount of subsidy is not large, it is difficult to receive the expected results.

In terms of tax incentives, the government considers deducting part of the cost of purchasing solar power plants from income tax.

In addition, it is also considered to greatly increase the unit price of selling excess electricity to power companies like Germany. The unit price of sales of Japan Electric Power is approximately 23 yen per kWh, which is roughly the same as the electricity usage fee. In 2004, Germany began to increase the unit price of electricity sales to about three times the power usage fee of about 90 yen. This is also a major reason why German solar power can be successfully spread.

For the government's upcoming preferential policies, industry insiders pointed out that there are still some difficulties in operation. It is not an easy task to regain the world's number one solar power generation.
