New Zealand plans to eliminate incandescent lamps in 2009

New Zealand government officials said on the 17th that New Zealand is considering bans on the sale of incandescent lamps from October 2009.

New Zealand Energy Secretary David Parker said in a statement that traditional incandescent lamps are very power hungry, with 95% of the electricity consumed by the bulbs generating heat and only 5% being used for lighting. This high-energy incandescent lamp will gradually be replaced by energy-saving fluorescent lamps.

Parker said: A new generation of lighting is coming. It is cheaper, more energy efficient, and more environmentally friendly.

New Zealand energy department spokesperson Janet Fitzsimmons said that government subsidies make fluorescent lamps cheap, and the use of such energy-saving lamps can save a lot of electricity for New Zealand.

She said that New Zealand will save $37 million in electricity bills by 2020 by switching to energy-saving lamps.

Previous reports indicate that Australia plans to introduce a similar incandescent ban in 2009. Many European countries such as Germany and the Netherlands have also begun to promote the use of energy-saving lamps.
