The robot cracked the password of the safe in half an hour.

This past week at the DefCon security conference in Las Vegas, a group of hackers from SparkFun Electronics showcased their ingenuity by using affordable robots to crack open SentrySafe’s combination locks in just under thirty minutes. The demonstration highlighted how these low-cost machines could significantly reduce the complexity of breaking into such safes by narrowing down the possible password combinations from one million to a mere thousand. Attached is an image showing the robot in action as it rapidly cycles through potential codes until it successfully opens the safe. (Image caption: “The robot managed to unlock the safe within half an hour.”) One of the key advantages of these robots lies in their ability to exploit slight imperfections in the manufacturing process of the safe's digital dials. By taking advantage of these small tolerances, the hackers were able to drastically cut down on the time spent testing every single possibility. This approach not only saves hours but also demonstrates vulnerabilities that manufacturers might need to address. What’s even more impressive is that these robots can be constructed using 3D-printed parts for around $200. Such affordability means they can be easily adapted to fit the specifications of various safe models from different brands. This adaptability makes them a versatile tool for ethical hacking purposes, allowing experts to identify weaknesses before malicious actors do. In essence, the success of this project underscores the importance of considering real-world variables when designing security systems. While digital combination locks offer convenience, they must also account for human error and physical inconsistencies during production. Otherwise, what seems like robust protection may turn out to be surprisingly vulnerable to creative solutions like those demonstrated at DefCon.
