Google module mobile phone is expected to be commercialized next year, Quanta computer power

On October 31, according to industry insiders, Project Ara, a module mobile phone project led by Google Advanced Technology and Projects Group (ATAP), is currently cooperating with more than 20 partners and is expected to enter commercial production next year.

Informed sources pointed out that many manufacturers in Taiwan's supply chain will make important contributions to the commercial production of Google's modular mobile phones. It is expected that the mobile phone framework will be produced by Quanta Computer, and the connector circuit board will be supplied by Foxconn Electronics.

Hardware partners will sell modular components directly to consumers through Google's platform, including displays, camera modules, CPUs, wireless modules, battery packs, memory modules and enclosures.

However, it remains to be seen whether such modular smartphones will be recognized and sought after by the market, as most consumers are more concerned about the brand and design of mobile phones.

According to another source, among Project Ara's partners, Quanta Computer will be the most important hardware supplier. Project Ara's orders are expected to boost the revenue of Quanta's non-notebook computers.

Quanta Computer declined to comment on customers or orders.

After 2015, Quanta Computer is expected to maintain its position as a leader in the notebook manufacturing industry, which will be the largest notebook computer supplier to HP and Apple. Quanta Computer also received a large number of orders from other brands such as Acer and Asus. According to people familiar with the matter, Quanta’s notebook shipments in 2015 are expected to reach 50 million units.

However, due to the difficulty in achieving further growth in the notebook industry, Quanta Computer has shifted its focus to non-notebook business.

Although Quanta Computer has not received too many smartphone orders, it will still develop application technologies related to 4G. It is expected that orders from Google Project Ara will provide substantial profits for it.

Quanta Computer recently said that the non-notebook business revenue contribution has reached about 35%.

In addition to Quanta Computer, other notebook ODM manufacturers are also actively expanding non-notebook business. Inventec, a subsidiary of Inventec, has received an order from Xiaomi; both Compal Computer and Wistron Group have entered the Apple smartphone supply chain. Quanta Computer has received an order for Apple Watch Apple Watch.
