Stereo Audio Subsystem (Maxim)

Maxim introduces the MAX9879 stereo audio subsystem with high integration and performance. The device integrates a high efficiency, high power, stereo Class D speaker amplifier; a DirectDrive® stereo headphone amplifier; and an ultra low noise analog bypass switch. In addition to integrating these circuits, the MAX9879 uses Maxim's third-generation ultra-low EMI, Class D amplifier technology to provide Class AB amplifier audio performance with Class D amplifier efficiency. With a 3.7V supply, the device is capable of delivering 715mW of output power to an 8Ω load with 88% (max) efficiency. Powered by a single-cell Li-Ion battery, the MAX9879 offers the industry's largest output power, ideal for cellular phones, portable media players (PMPs), and other applications that require high sound quality, high output power, and high efficiency.

Maxim's proprietary DirectDrive architecture produces a ground-referenced output from a single supply, eliminating the need for bulky DC-blocking capacitors. To further save cost and space, the MAX9879 combines Maxim's proprietary Class D amplifier technology, active emission rejection, and spread-spectrum modulation techniques to significantly reduce EMI and eliminate the output filters typically required for Class D amplifiers. In addition, the integrated low noise analog DPST audio switch allows the user to bypass the Class D amplifier to reduce power consumption in portable devices, eliminating the need for external switches.

The MAX9879 offers the industry's best click/pop suppression with no audible noise on power-up/down, and the device's high RF/TDMA noise rejection simplifies the design process. Other features include input mixing, volume control, full click/pop suppression, and a flexible, user-defined input architecture with preamplifier gain settings. All controls are implemented via the I2C interface.

The MAX9879 is available in a 2.5mm x 3mm, 30-bump UCSPTM package and is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. An evaluation board is available to speed up the design process.
