US Super LED Billboard: 3,200 square feet (Figure)


On the new big screen of Times Square, D3 LED introduced a LED light-emitting diode equivalent to 25 times.

With more than two million ultra-bright, low-cost light-emitting diodes (LEDs), engineers built a 3,200-square-foot super billboard that plays full-range, high-definition (HD) video.

The billboard is located in Times Square, New York, USA, and its resolution has changed dramatically from its predecessor, because the price of LEDs has been significantly reduced over the past seven years.

The drop in LED cost allows us to improve the look and resolution of the screen. Meric Adriansen, a founding partner of D3 LED, said. D3 LED is a digital display company that designs a large advertising screen for the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

D3 LEDs improve the clarity of the screen by reducing the pixel pitch of the LED display. Replacing the 50mm pitch on the 1999 advertising screen, the company's engineers used a 10mm pixel pitch. In effect, this means that the new advertising screen LEDs have increased by a factor of 25 (the LEDs are five times larger in the vertical and horizontal directions). Adriansen said that because the price of LED is 1/3 of that in 1999, it is possible to double the LED.

In the large-screen design, engineers introduced a 3-x 40-inch electronic unit containing 800 super elliptical LEDs from Nichia. It is embedded with a processor, control system, cooling fan, logic control, and Gigabit Ethernet data bus to ensure communication between the large screen and the data source.

Basically, there are 3,550 computers on a gigabit data pipeline that count thousands of times per second, collect image fragments and display them. Adriansen said.

The 3,200-square-foot large screen is said to be the only one in the world with nine horizontally set, three-dimensional curved wave sections.

When the big screen was first introduced in 1999, people were amazed that it was epoch-making. Adriansen said. Today, our customers need miracles to happen again.
