Altium Designer's OSHw Open Source Project

When you start using new electronic design software, or start new electronic design and engineering, it is very helpful for you to study other people's reference designs. Can you understand what it can achieve? How to achieve? Also, you often get inspiration from solving problems with reference designs. For example, how to implement DDR routing with a minimum number of layers and how to fan out BGA devices. Open source projects often provide designers with help and inspiration. At the same time, they also provide services for new products that everyone benefits from. So, I want to show you several open source projects, all using AlTium Designer.

AlTium Designer is a professional commercial development and design environment. From this perspective, its representation in the open source community is not strong. Recently, more and more open source projects designed by AlTIum Designer have been released one after another. Usually the hardware of these projects is very complicated, the purpose of the design is for other development environments, for example: based on Linux software development. Some are public hardware projects developed by commercial companies, or open source hardware (OSHw) that is freely designed by design engineers to help them conduct business promotion. Here are a few OSHw projects created by AlTIum Designer. If you are interested, you can see:

The iMX6 Rex is a module that includes a 1.2 GHz Freescale iMX6 CPU (dual-core or quad-core) processor and includes: DDR3 memory, a high-speed signal interface, and a large number of common interfaces. They are all placed on a credit card-sized PCB board. The design, testing process, and experimental results of the iMX6 Rex are all on development websites and blogs so that I can easily gain experience from the PCB design flow. Through an associated development board, various IO signals can be connected to the actual interface circuit, thus forming a powerful computing platform. This platform includes: PCIe, SATA, HDMI, LCD interface, high-definition audio, Ethernet, USB, serial SD card, and user IO. Design items and documentation for the iMX6 Rex and development boards are available for free registration. Click here to download the source data.

RHINO, representing a resettable hardware interface for computing and radio stations, is a larger software radio application development platform. At the heart of the platform is the Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA and the Texas Instruments ARM Cortex A8 processor. The analog part is expanded by two FMC connectors. The board includes: DDR2 and DDR3 memory, 10Mbps Ethernet, USB 2.0, and 10 Gbps communication interfaces with tutorials to help beginners use the BORPHLinux interface. You can get the hardware design source data from the project's SVN repository.

The TurrisTurris project is a true Internet of Things (IoT) project. At the heart of the Turris project are home WiFi routers and Gigabit Ethernet switches, which can analyze all sent and received data in detail and find out what is intended to attack the home network. For this reason, routers are required to have more computing power than conventional devices. Over time, global Turris router devices can share these threat analysis data and build a large-capacity database that helps us to quickly and easily detect threat cues and build a secure network environment. The printed circuit board contains several switching power supply regulators that support DDR3 SODIMMs and feature a powerful Freescale P2020 1.2 GHz processor. With the use of a commercially available mini PCI-Express expansion card, 3 mode WiFi up to 803.11n can be achieved. Hardware source files can be downloaded from the Turris hardware page.

Novena defines the project goal as the first OSHw laptop. It includes: iMX6 CPU with ARM Cortex A9 1.2GH (with iMX6 rex), DDR3 memory, two USB 2.0 ports, a small PCI-express slot, a full HD display connected via LVDS, Gigabit network ports, HDMI And HD audio. The reason for choosing these devices is that it is easy to obtain their public information and easy access to open source operating systems. The board also features Spartan 6 FPGAs for graphics and high-performance computing acceleration. As of May 2014, the Novena project was in the final financing stage, and the financing funds had exceeded the required funds, which effectively pushed the Novena project into large-scale production. CERN-CERN (European Nuclear Energy Research Center) is a famous research center with particle accelerators. Altium Designer is one of the many design tools at the European Nuclear Energy Research Center. Their electronics engineers use it to complete many projects. Many of the projects can be found in the open source hardware library. Only a few are listed below:

FMC ADC 250M 16B 4CHA - Source Data in SVN Central Database

SIMPLE VME FMC Carrier (SVEC) - Source data in SVN Central Database

CONV TTL BLOCKING - Source Data in SVN Central Library

VUE32 is a universal control unit for experimental electric vehicles. This originated from a student project dedicated to building an electric vehicle. The VUE32 played a vital role in the communication between sensors, controllers, and subsequent computers. Its main processor uses the PIC32. The device has four 10A control outputs, two 2A outputs, and a total of 12 analog inputs. Communication via CAN 2.0b and USB 2.0. Please download the source data here.

Integrate into AltiumLive?

"Officially open source" designs are those publicly available, developed using Altium tools. They include Red Pitaya or ZedBoard. To make it easier to design these projects and make them meet the general form factor, a large number of project template libraries have been provided to users in the Content Store, including: standard form templates (with connectors) such as: PCI, PCIe, SODIMM , VME, QSeven, etc.

We really want to know what the users of the Altium community think? With regard to the growing trend of open source hardware design, is it necessary to open a page on the website and discuss the content and sharing of open source?
