Amit Singh, vice president of Google's virtual reality business and operations, recently shared in an interview that hundreds of millions of Android smartphones will be equipped with augmented reality (AR) capabilities next year. Speaking at the Lisbon Network Summit in Portugal, he emphasized that thanks to the Google ARCore development framework, AR is set to become a part of daily life for millions starting in 2018.
Singh explained that the technology is already in the early stages of development, with many developers preparing for the launch. "Once the development experience becomes richer and user habits are formed, augmented reality will naturally become a part of everyday life," he said. He also highlighted the potential for AR to create new business opportunities, such as in gaming and retail.
"In the coming years, Augmented Reality will become a core feature of the Android platform. Once this transition begins, everything will follow naturally," he added. A recent image accompanying the report shows that AR is expected to become a key function of Android, with hundreds of millions of devices ready to support it by next year.
In August, Google launched the ARCore development tool, designed to allow AR applications to run on devices without depth sensors. The platform is user-friendly and widely supported, currently working on devices like the Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8. Google has promised that by the end of the year, over 100 million devices will support ARCore.
Looking ahead, the company expects the number of ARCore-compatible devices to reach hundreds of millions by next year, including mid-range Android phones. This expansion is expected to bring AR into the mainstream, making it more accessible and integrated into everyday use. As more developers join the ecosystem, the future of AR on Android looks promising and increasingly inevitable.
