Most smart manufacturing systems today are still limited to repetitive, pre-programmed tasks—essentially mechanical operations that lack creativity and adaptability.
For instance, while robotic arms can perform complex movements, they often rely on pre-set instructions rather than independent decision-making. This means that even though these machines are efficient, they don’t truly "think" or innovate. The novelty in many demonstrations comes not from the machine itself, but from the creative way it's programmed to perform a task. This distinction highlights a critical gap between automation and real intelligence.
To move forward, China must prioritize innovation and invest heavily in advanced technologies such as AI, big data, and cloud computing. As Zhou Ji, Dean of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, emphasized, the path to success lies in parallel development—advancing digitalization, networking, and intelligence simultaneously. By doing so, China can foster deeper industrial integration and drive meaningful transformation.
The release of China’s “New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan†earlier this year reflects the nation’s commitment to leveraging AI for economic growth. AI is no longer just a tool for industry—it is becoming a core driver across sectors, including services, security, entertainment, and more. The AlphaDog example illustrates this shift: its ability to learn and adapt stems from powerful algorithms, enabling it to handle dynamic situations in ways that mimic human intelligence.
This evolution marks a turning point in smart manufacturing. Machines are moving beyond mere automation and beginning to exhibit a form of "intelligence." While robots may not yet match the complexity of human cognition, they are becoming more adaptable and capable of learning from experience. This transition—from "machine-centered" to "people-centered" systems—is essential for the next phase of industrial development.
As Dong Mingzhu of Gree Electric Appliances noted, innovation is no longer about imitation but about creating new value. With over 10,000 R&D personnel and numerous research institutes, Gree exemplifies the kind of investment needed to push the boundaries of smart manufacturing. Only through sustained innovation can China truly transform “Made in China†into a symbol of global excellence.
