Shanghai, China, July 2, 2015: GLOBALFOUNDRIES announced today that it has completed the acquisition of IBM's microelectronics business.
Through this acquisition, Grophyn Semiconductor has acquired a range of differentiated technologies that can be used to enhance its portfolio of products in major growth markets such as military, Internet of Things (IoT), big data and high performance computing. The deal enhances the company's workforce, adding decades of experience and deep expertise in semiconductor R&D, device design and manufacturing. In addition, after more than 16,000 patents and applications, Groffont has become one of the world's largest semiconductor patent portfolio holders.

By absorbing some of the smartest and most innovative scientists and engineers in the semiconductor industry, Groffonte Semiconductor has consolidated its leadership in the journey to 10nm, 7nm and more advanced processes.
In the RF field, Groffonte Semiconductor currently holds a leading position in the wireless front-end module market. IBM has developed world-class RF silicon-on-insulator (RFSOI) and high-performance silicon germanium (SiGe) technology, which complements Grohfontein's existing mainstream technology portfolio. The company will continue to increase its investment in launching its next-generation RFSOI roadmap and capturing business opportunities in the automotive and home markets.
In the ASIC space, Groffonte Semiconductor is currently a leader in the wireline communications market, enabling the company to provide the IP and design capabilities needed to develop these high-performance custom products and solutions. While investing more, the company plans to develop more ASIC solutions for storage, printers and networking applications. The latest ASIC series released in January this year is based on Groffonte Semiconductor's 14nm-LPP process, which has also been favored by the market and won several design orders.
The two fabs in East Fishkill, New York, and Essex JuncTIon, Vermont, will increase their production capacity for Groffonte Semiconductor. The two fabs will be part of the company's growing global business, not only will capacity increase significantly, but will also add top engineers to the company to better meet existing and new customer needs.
In addition, the transaction is based on the company's investment projects in the emerging Northeastern Technology Corridor, including Grofed Semiconductor's Fab 8 fab in Saratoga County, New York, and its State University of New York, Albany, NY. The research and development work jointly carried out by the College of Nanoscience and Engineering. Currently, the company employs more than 8,000 people in the Northeastern United States.
The acquisition includes exclusive supply to IBM for the world's most advanced semiconductor solutions for the next decade. Groffonte Semiconductor also has direct access to IBM's world-class semiconductor R&D projects to strengthen its company's leadership in the journey to 10nm and more advanced technologies.
