NEC has developed a technology for operating a smartphone in a noisy environment

Recently, by combining noise cancellation technology and voice enhancement technology, NEC has developed a voice recognition technology that does not require clinging to a smartphone or tablet computer for voice operations in noisy places.

Products such as home appliances and portable terminals use voice operation functions more and more, but currently it is necessary to make the built-in microphone close to the mouth to clearly pronounce. Therefore, in a noisy environment such as a room where a TV is turned on, a kitchen that is cooking, and a moving car, there is a problem that the terminal does not respond to voice, or reacts to noise, and malfunctions occur.

After using the newly developed technology of NEC, even in the noisy environment where the voice function is difficult to use, even the voice emitted from a microphone at a certain distance can be correctly detected to realize the operation of the terminal. For example, a terminal placed on a table can be operated from a distance of about 1 m in a noisy living room. The noise cancellation technology and speech enhancement technology developed this time are summarized as follows.

(1) Use secondary microphone to detect noise components and accurately track noise

Most portable terminals such as smartphones are equipped with a main microphone on the front and a sub microphone on the back or side. NEC's technology focuses on such a dual microphone design. When using the dual microphone design, it is easy to make the main microphone mainly pick up voice input, and the sub microphone mainly pick up noise. Therefore, when the main microphone does not have voice input (such as before the voice input is about to begin, etc.), the sound collected from the sub microphone The noise component can be clarified. In this way, when the main microphone has voice input, it can easily track the noise accurately and remove it.

(2) Use the voice model to adjust to the most suitable state for voice recognition

Aiming at distorted and difficult-to-recognize speech after removing noise, this time we developed a technique to enhance speech components based on the model. This technology can correct the distorted speech into a waveform-like speech model, making speech recognition easier. According to reports, the accuracy of voice recognition is higher than the global standard of portable terminal voice recognition ETSI Advanced Front-End (AFE).
