Amit Singh, vice president of Google's virtual reality business and operations, recently shared his vision during an interview, stating that hundreds of millions of Android smartphones will support augmented reality (AR) next year. Speaking at the Lisbon Network Summit in Portugal, Singh emphasized that thanks to Google’s ARCore development framework, AR is set to become a part of everyday life for millions starting in 2018.
"By next year, there will be hundreds of millions of devices ready for AR. The development process is already underway, and once the ecosystem becomes rich and user habits are established, AR will seamlessly integrate into daily routines," Singh explained. He also highlighted potential business opportunities in areas like gaming and shopping, noting that AR is becoming a core feature of the Android platform.
"In the coming years, AR will be a fundamental part of Android. Once this shift begins, everything will follow naturally," he added. A recent image shared by Google shows the growing importance of AR on Android, with the promise of hundreds of millions of supported devices next year.
In August, Google launched ARCore, a powerful tool designed to enable AR experiences on devices without depth sensors. It is user-friendly and widely compatible, currently supporting models like the Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8. By the end of the year, Google aims to have over 100 million devices running ARCore.
Looking ahead, the company expects this number to surge to hundreds of millions by next year, including mid-range Android phones. This expansion will ensure broader accessibility and further drive the adoption of AR across the Android ecosystem. As more developers create immersive AR experiences, the technology is set to transform how people interact with their devices and the world around them.
