Look at the safety of the whole vehicle: Audi driving assistance system analysis

Today's Audi driver assistance system from adaptive cruise control with stop&go function to speed limit display, Audi offers a wealth of auxiliary systems to make driving easier and more controllable. In some high-end cars, various auxiliary systems are connected to each other, which enhances the intelligence of the system and makes the function more comprehensive and powerful.

Adaptive cruise control with stop&go function

At the heart of Audi's driver assistance system is adaptive cruise control with stop&go function, an automatic follow-up distance maintenance system. In the speed range of 0 to 250 km / h, the system controls the speed of the vehicle and the distance to the preceding vehicle by automatic acceleration or automatic braking.

The system uses two radar sensors mounted on the front of the vehicle (which automatically heats up when cold) to transmit radar waves at a frequency of 76.5 GHz, covering a field of view of approximately 40 degrees and a length of approximately 250 meters. The sensor control unit processes the signal to monitor the situation in front of the car.

The driver can influence the function of the ACC system. From movement to comfort, the distance to the car and the intervention of the control system are step-wise adjustable. The maximum deceleration of the system is limited to approximately 4 m / s 2, which is approximately one-third of the maximum deceleration.

In the face of stop-and-go traffic conditions, the ACC system can automatically slow down the speed until parking. After a brief stop such as a traffic light, the car automatically starts again and keeps up with the front car. If it is a long stop, the driver must step on the throttle or operate the lever to continue following the car. Before starting, the system will check the image data provided by the camera on the rear view mirror. In this way, the system can detect potential dangers – such as wanting to grab pedestrians crossing the road at the last minute of the green light. The ultrasonic sensor of the parking system provides more detailed information to monitor the car's start-up process.

The ACC system works closely with other driver assistance systems. It uses data from up to 27 control units to continuously analyze the car's surroundings and provide predictive support even in complex situations. For example, the system works with the navigation system to know in advance the route selected and to calculate the lane on the curve.

The ACC system can come in handy in many situations. Whether it's faster than a right-turning car on a country road or a car entering another lane on the highway, the system's sensitive, calm response is comparable to a highly skilled driver, making it even more mobile. Smooth and coordinated.

Audi offers multiple versions of the ACC system for different models, including without stop/start. The functionality of each version is slightly different depending on the degree of networking and the level of expansion.

Audi active lane keeping

Audi's active lane keeping function is one of the auxiliary systems currently being offered by Audi, and most Audi models equipped with electromechanical steering assist can be equipped with this function. When the vehicle speed exceeds 60 km/h, the Audi Active Lane Keeping function detects the lane markings with a camera mounted in front of the interior rearview mirror. The camera covers a distance of more than 50 meters in front of the car and a road range of approximately 40 degrees of field of view, providing 25 high-definition images per second.

The in-vehicle software is responsible for monitoring the lane markings and the lanes in the two lane markings from the image. If the car is biased towards a side lane marking without a turn signal, the system will help the car return to the "right path" by making a small and effective intervention in the electromechanical steering system. The driver can determine the speed of response to this intervention through the MMI and whether it is combined with the steering wheel vibration warning. If the driver chooses early intervention, the system can keep the car in the center of the lane. Active lane keeping allows Audi to stand out from the competition.

Audi lateral assistance

Audi Side Assist is a line-assisted system that is available for all Audi models. This feature monitors traffic behind the car and warns the driver before a dangerous lane change.

When the car reaches a certain set speed, the Audi side assist system will be activated. Two radar sensors located outside the rearview mirror and frequency of 24 GHz are responsible for monitoring the situation within 70 meters behind the car. The data is analyzed by computer.

When it is detected that a car is present in a dangerous area - such as the blind area of the car's rear view mirror or is approaching the car quickly from the rear - the system enters the so-called "tip" phase. At this time, the yellow LED on the exterior mirror bracket will lightly illuminate, but it will not interfere with driving. The driver can only see this prompt when looking directly at the rearview mirror.

If the driver of the vehicle is ready to change lanes at this time, the brightness of the indicator light on the exterior mirror bracket will suddenly increase and flash repeatedly. At this time, the system entered the "warning" stage, and such warning signals would make it difficult for the driver of the vehicle to ignore. Because the LED indicator light is directed to the driver, its brightness can be changed according to the ambient illumination brightness, or it can be set separately through the MMI control terminal.

Night vision aid

At the heart of the night vision aid system is a far-infrared camera in front of the car that covers the 24-degree viewing angle and is equipped with a glass cover to protect against stone hits. In cold weather, the glass cover can be heated and cleaned when dirty. As a far infrared system (FIR), the camera can capture the heat radiation of objects in the scene, and the computer is responsible for converting the data collected by the camera into black and white images and displaying them on the central display of the dashboard inside the vehicle.

Far-infrared technology has a detection range of up to 300 meters, far beyond the range of the high beam of the car, and does not fail due to the influence of headlights or similar sources. Most importantly, the far infrared can focus on the most important object - the person. Regardless of whether the pedestrians are bright or dark in the environment, because the human body emits heat, they are always bright and conspicuous in the far infrared image, while the colder surroundings appear darker.

Image processing software can detect pedestrians within a range of approximately 100 meters. When analyzing data, the analysis software pays special attention to objects that resemble human contours, as well as bright, round objects—the human head. The pedestrians that will be monitored by the system are highlighted in yellow on the display in the center of the dashboard. If the control unit believes that a danger may occur, such as when a pedestrian is walking on a road closer to the car, the pedestrian in the display will be marked red and an audible warning will sound. Warning signs will also appear on the head-up display of some Audi models.

Whether it is a marker, an audible warning or an image contrast, it can be set via the MMI system. Like other auxiliary systems, night vision assistance systems have certain system limitations. For example, if the temperature is above 28 degrees Celsius, the feature that highlights the pedestrian will be turned off.

Parking assistance

Audi offers a variety of different parking systems for all models. These systems either use ultrasound, acousto-optic signals, or a rear-view camera that can display images through an on-board display. Among them, parking assistance is a particularly convenient solution. When the driver reverses the position, the parking assist system is responsible for performing all relevant steering controls, both for vertical parking and for parallel side parking. When the car is moving at a slower speed, the system scans the roadside for two-dimensionally and locates the appropriate parking space via a side ultrasonic sensor. The system informs the driver through the display after finding the appropriate parking space.

If the driver wishes to park in and hang up, the parking assist system will be activated automatically and all relevant steering controls will be completed with the assistance of the electromechanical steering assist system. The driver must continue to be responsible for acceleration, shifting and braking. The system also provides support through visual and acoustic signals. When parallel side parking is performed, only the length of the parking space exceeds about 0.8 meters of the length of the car. If necessary, the parking assist system will perform multiple “forward and backward” “shifts” to complete the parking, and the system will provide similar support when leaving the parking space.

Audi's latest achievement in this field is the enhanced parking system with 360° omnidirectional camera. The four small cameras on the integrated grille, rear and side mirror brackets record images of the environment around the car.

The driver can select images from different perspectives through the on-board display to observe the real environment around the car, including the overhead view. The enhanced parking system with 360° omni-directional camera not only enhances safety when parking, but also ensures safety at narrow intersections. The system provides a special view to show real-time conditions in front of and behind the car, allowing the driver to see the traffic conditions at the front and rear intersections.
